2 weeks into an a March heatwave it seems like a long time ago we were skiing cold powder in a storm, but it was only 2 weeks... I had a great week coaching and guiding a group from the Eagle Ski Club. Based in Bozel, we skied mostly in the 3 Valleys, with conditions going from one extreme to the other- -10C and hiding in the trees from the storm on Monday to +10C and afternoon slush by the Friday!
2 weeks later and there is still cold snow to be found on shady slopes, with good spring snow on sunnier aspects if you can get away from old ski tracks and get the timing just right!

A bit of snow at last.
The big high pressure and associated blue skies have finally been pushed aside by some more unstable conditions and some fresh snow.
This week Ihave been skiing with Tim, John and Phil on our regular early Jan week. We started with some more technically-focussed days on chalky steepness, braved the blizzards on Wednesday, and were rewarded with some good powder on Thursday!

Vanoise adventures
The Foehn wind is currently raging outside while I am having a well-timed day off after a busy week of steep ski coaching in the Vanoise for Jerry, Stuart, Jason and Roger. With an average age of 61.75 these boys can still rip and show there is no age limit for making changes in your skiing!
Thanks to the gang for a great week! Next years dates are already in the diary...

Courchevel Powder
Winter 2015/16 is most definitely 'happening'!
After a timely cancellation on agreement of both parties on Monday due to pouring rain to about 2000m the 0ยบ isotherm dropped and we have been treated to 2 spectacular days of powder skiing in Courchevel 1650. With a high avalanche risk steep slopes were definitely to be avoided, but when it is this good on piste, who needs to go further afield?:
Having skied in 1650 as a kid in the early 80s, and been nased there for most of the early 00s, I was rmeinded just how good it is on a powder day, when the majority of people head off towards the main part of Courchevel & the 3 Valleys, leaving acres of fun terrain just waiting for tracks!
Yesterday we had a slightly mellower day, but were still putting down fresh tracks at 4pm!
On an equipment note, having now spent a good few days skiing the Salomon MTN LAB boots with bigger skis in deeper snow I can still say that they are absolutely ticking all the boxes for me! Look out for some second hand Dynafit Mercurys coming onto the market soon!

Snow!
The forecast large snowfalls have arrived!
Great tree skiing to be had currently - but care will be needed when it clears as the already very spicy snowpack will now be even more so until this lot has time to settle down properly (could be some time!).
Last week I was coaching a couple of IFMGA mountain guides and their friends - a good time was had by all and we managed to find some good snow to ski despite ending up on Plan C (or beyond) a couple for times. For once someone else had a camera (and knows how to take a mean photo), so thanks to Andy Perkins for this one of me testing out my new Whitedot Skis Director Carbonlites - very impressed so far:
